338 Lapua with a Suite of High-End Add-ons
- Builder: ST TACTICAL Custom Firearms -
TThe beauty of firearms, much like many other tools and hobbies, is that they can be as simple or as sophisticated as you want them to be. For enthusiasts who crave precision, efficiency, and the unique appeal of a customized tool, a custom-built rifle represents the epitome of personalization. The 338 Lapua with a Proof Carbon Fiber Barrel, Kelbly's Atlas Lite Action, Woox Outdoor Furiosa Chassis, Accutac Bipod, and Burris Optics Eliminator Optic is one such example of custom craftsmanship and meticulous selection of components.
The Base: .338 Lapua
First and foremost, it’s worth acknowledging the superb platform upon which this custom build is based. The .338 Lapua Magnum, developed in the 1980s as a high-powered, long-range cartridge for military snipers, is renowned for its incredible accuracy over great distances. It has consistently demonstrated the ability to deliver a high level of ballistic performance, with the potential to accurately hit targets more than a mile away. The .338 Lapua provides a solid and robust basis for any custom rifle build.
The Barrel: Proof Carbon Fiber
Next up is the barrel – the heart and soul of any rifle. This custom build uses a Proof Carbon Fiber Barrel, an innovative and high-performance option that combines the best of both worlds: the rigidity and accuracy of steel with the weight-saving benefits of carbon fiber. The combination results in a lighter, more maneuverable rifle that doesn’t compromise on accuracy.
The Action: Kelbly's Atlas Lite
The Atlas Lite Action is a Remington semi-clone action designed to fit Remington 700/40x stocks or chassis with minimal modifications. Introduced in the first quarter of 2020, it comes with an anti-shear pivoting bolt stop that impacts the action instead of the retention screw, eliminating the issue of broken bolt stop screws. The Atlas Lite Action offers a range of features including a one-piece bolt with an aluminum handle, a tilted TG mechanical ejector, Sako extractor, and three handle options. It has a BlackNitride finish and uses a dual pin .250” recoil lug. Magazine options for short and long action are AICS/AW and ADL/BDL respectively, with compatibility for AICS CIP Length Magazines (3.850”). It's designed for use with Hawkins Precision Direct Mount Rings and is compatible with standard Atlas Rails.
The Chassis: WOOX Furiosa
Used in this project
However, a successful rifle build encompasses not only performance but also aesthetics and ergonomics. This is where the Furiosa chassis steps in, tying together all the components of the Rim-X 22LR. The Furiosa chassis not only adds a touch of elegance to the rifle but also enhances its stability and ergonomics. Crafted with precision and attention to detail, the Furiosa chassis provides a solid foundation, ensuring optimal balance and control for shooters.
The Bipod: Accutac
To assist with stability, this build includes an Accutac Bipod. Accutac is known for its heavy-duty, precision-engineered bipods that offer superior stability and control. These bipods feature a unique, quick-detach system and adjustable legs, allowing for rapid setup and customization to the shooting conditions. The inclusion of an Accutac Bipod means this custom build is well equipped for precise shots, even in less-than-ideal conditions.
The Optic: Burris Optics Eliminator
The Eliminator LaserScope is a revolutionary hunting riflescope, offering unparalleled functionality and precision. With just a button push, it calculates distance to the target, factors in the angle, and displays the precise aiming point and wind details directly in the scope. This equips hunters with a comprehensive situational overview, significantly enhancing their efficiency and ethical hunting range. The latest editions, Eliminator IV and Eliminator 5, boast built-in laser rangefinders capable of measuring up to 2,000 yards. Regardless of the magnification level, the trajectory compensation remains accurate, while an integrated inclinometer adjusts for uphill or downhill shots. These advanced scopes support a variety of ammunition including centerfire, rimfire, muzzleloader, and slug gun loads, offering even greater flexibility. To enhance usability, they feature a wireless Bluetooth remote for laser activation and can be programmed with specific load data using the Burris Connect App.
The .338 Lapua Magnum
The .338 Lapua Magnum is a rimless, bottlenecked, centerfire rifle cartridge. It was developed during the 1980s as a high-powered, long-range cartridge for military snipers. Over time, it has become popular among long-distance shooters due to its high level of precision and consistency
The .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge provides exceptional performance, offering a balance of power, range, and accuracy that surpasses many other commonly available cartridges. It has demonstrated the ability to deliver reliable and highly accurate fire at distances over 1,600 meters (1,750 yards), and even out to 2,500 meters in some cases.
The .338 Lapua Magnum is capable of launching heavier bullets than smaller caliber cartridges, maintaining higher kinetic energy downrange and resisting wind deflection, which makes it ideal for long-range shooting. Additionally, its relatively large case volume allows it to perform well even with heavy, high-drag bullets.
The .338 Lapua Magnum is used by many militaries around the world, including the U.S. Army, and is also popular among civilian shooters for long-range target shooting and hunting. Its power and range have also made it a favorite among big game hunters targeting large or dangerous game at long distances.
However, it is worth noting that the power and range of the .338 Lapua Magnum come with significant recoil and the cartridge itself is relatively expensive compared to more common calibers. Moreover, rifles chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum tend to be heavier and more robust than those for less powerful rounds. As a result, it is often considered a specialized round, best suited for specific roles where its unique attributes can be fully utilized.
In conclusion, this custom-built .338 Lapua is a testament to what can be achieved when passion, craftsmanship, and high-end components come together. From the powerful and accurate .338 Lapua base to the precision-engineered add-ons, this is a build that epitomizes the best of the long-range shooting world.
